Ways to pass time on long haul flights

Travelling the world means having to travel much longer distance to get to those desired destinations.  As much as i love travelling, i dread surviving on long haul flights. My flight to Europe last Summer was abt 15hrs and besides sleeping, here's what I did:

1. Catched up on movies
A perfect opportunity to catch up on the movies on your “must-see” list although they are at least 3 months old, but the probability of the airline playing the movies on your list is pretty high. The perfect way to pass four to five hours easily. Headsets are always handed out on long haul flights.

2. Learn a couple phrases in a foreign language
Your long flight offers you the opportunity to read your phrasebook, learn a few words in the local language, or brush up on your language skills if you’re more than a beginner. If you bring along your own audio device like an iPod, MP3, or CD player, you can bring along a small audio phrasebook as well.

3. Read the inflight magazine
Check out the duty free catalogue. Some flights offers free magazine and newspaper such as cosmopolitian, business times, golf magazine.
4. Stretch your legs
Every two hours or so, do get up and move around the cabin. Make multiple laps down the length of your cabin to get the blood flowing again. Strolling around the cabin is also a great way to people watch, and observe the various ways others are surviving a long flight.
5. Strike up conversation
Of course, this depends on who you find yourself sitting next to. Many lasting friendships are forged through random conversations started on airplanes. You could start by commiserating on why you’re both on the long haul hour flight, what you both plan to do once you arrive at your destination, how long you’ll both be staying, and so much more. You will be surprised at the endless conversation you are going to have. Who knows, you just might meet your next travel buddy or next career opportunity.

6. Read a book
I will never go travelling without a good book. If you forgot to do so, simply grab a book at one of the airport stores before you board. There are tons of excellent books and travel stories. Travel stories are a great way to keep your excitement up and help your escape once the restriction of the airplane starts to bear down on you.

7. Listen to music
Most airlines play a decent collection of music on many channels and you’re bound to find one you like. You can bring along your own audio device and groove to your own beats especially for budget airline travellers.

8. Write in your journal
Long flights back provide the perfect opportunity to reflect on your travels and jot down your feelings, observations, and experiences. You can jot down ideas, look through your camera or begin the draft of a blog entry.

9. Drink plenty of water, Fruit juice, wine, champagne

10. Play games
A deck of cards might come in handy if your seatmate is a great sport and knows a few card games. You can also teach them new games too! I shared the new game - Monopoly Deal with a random traveller from Holland when i was in Vietnam last winter.
Based on your preference, you could bring along handheld electronic gaming devices such as your PSP, Notebook or non online game on your iphone.
